Faro is located at the margin of the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, a saltmarsh ecosystem that extends for 60 km long and 6 km width. It is separated from the Atlantic ocean by sand dunes that are interrupted by few bars, allowing the ocean water to enter inside the lagoon, with the tides. The residence time is varies until 25 days, with an average of 12 days. The lagoon is a high productive system with a nursery role for several fish species. The salt marsh and the muddy sediment act as buffers for urban contamination that might enter the system. The “Faro beach” is on one of sand dunes, and can be accessed by car, crossing the lagoon by a connecting bridge to the mainland.
